Grand decorative Japanese bronze plaque from the late 19th century – Meiji period (1868-1912). You can recognize it right away by: 1. Material and technique Bronze patinated brown-black with gilded highlights (mixed-metal / inlay technique). The decoration is in relief, cast and then chiseled, not painted. This is typical of Meiji bronzes. 2. Motifs – everything is symbolic: In the center: a crane (tsuru) among reeds, surrounded by chrysanthemums. The crane = longevity, fidelity. Chrysanthemums (kiku): the imperial flower of Japan. Along the border: 2 dragons winding around. Dragon = power, protection. The patina seems original, with a bit of green oxidation in places. Back is bare, hammered by hand, no porcelain, it’s a thick bronze/brass sheet plaque. No visible signature, signs of use, it’s a 120–140 year-old object!!! Very beautiful authentic item!!!
