A Japanese six-panel folding screen (byōbu), painted on paper and embellished with gold leaf and gold sand, depicting three red-crowned cranes (tanchō-zuru) in a coastal landscape. The cranes are depicted standing on rocky outcrops surrounded by waves, while a group of turtles gathers on another rock amid the sea foam. On the right, tall bamboo stalks frame the composition. Stylized waves flow rhythmically across the landscape, while broad golden clouds articulate the background. The gold leaf and gold sand illuminate the surface, creating a refined contrast with the darker tones of the rocks, waves, and bamboo. In Japanese tradition, both cranes and turtles are associated with longevity, reinforcing the auspicious character of the composition. The screen is finished with silk borders and a lacquered wooden frame. The screen can also be easily mounted on a wall or used as a room divider. Byōbu (屏風), literally “wind protection screens,” are traditional Japanese folding screens originally created to divide spaces and today appreciated above all as striking wall-mounted paintings. --- The byobu is in good condition, with minor wear consistent with age and wear to the lacquered frame.
