GUIART (Jean). Oceania "L'Univers des Formes" series, edited by André Malraux and Georges Salles. Paris, Gallimard, circa 1963. An important volume in the renowned “L’Univers des Formes” collection, devoted to the traditional arts of Oceania. An ethnologist and renowned specialist in Melanesian societies, Jean Guiart (1925–2019) presents here a masterful overview of the artistic creations of the peoples of the Pacific: sculptures, masks, ceremonial objects, architecture, adornments, and ritual emblems. Richly illustrated with black-and-white and color photographs, the book highlights the artistic richness of Oceanic cultures and their place in the universal history of forms. Like the other titles in the collection edited by André Malraux, it combines scientific rigor, high-quality illustrations, and remarkable editorial elegance. A beautiful copy, preserved with its illustrated dust jacket. A substantial in-4 volume bound in the publisher’s illustrated dust jacket, with rich iconography.
