BELLIER (Jean-Claude) — Melanesia Paris, Galerie Jean-Claude Bellier, 1974. In-4, [48] pp., publisher’s hardcover illustrated with a large color photograph of a Melanesian mask, blank spine, laminated covers. Abundant photographic illustrations, in black-and-white and color, often full-page. The catalog has 48 pages. Catalog of the “Melanesia” exhibition held at the Galerie Jean-Claude Bellier, Paris, from January 30 to February 23, 1974. A beautiful catalog devoted to the arts of Melanesia and Papua New Guinea, featuring masks, sculptures, and ritual objects, among other items. Among the pieces reproduced are a Chubwan mask from Pentecost Island and a remarkable pair of N’Gonde figures, Koromo Koromo and Nakorana. This catalog has become a key reference for provenance in Oceanic art: several objects from the 1974 Bellier exhibition are now documented in major international collections and auctions. Sotheby’s explicitly cites Jean-Claude Bellier, *Melanesia,* Paris, 1974 in the bibliography for an important mask from the Gulf of Papua exhibited at Bellier in 1974; a Kerewa votive panel that later entered the Michel Périnet collection is also documented as originating from this exhibition. Condition: good example. Some scuffing and minor signs of wear on the cardboard, particularly on the headdresses and corners; interior is in very good condition.
