Madagascar - Cretaceous Period (Albian) — This superb specimen of Cleoniceras ammonite represents an exceptional fragment of natural history from the Mahajanga Basin, Madagascar. The fossil, dating to the Cretaceous period (Albian stage, about 110 million years ago), has been cut and meticulously polished to reveal not only its complex internal structure but above all a spectacular natural iridescence. The shell surface comes alive with vivid flashes of fiery color, a rare phenomenon that attests to an extraordinary state of preservation. Direct observation of the specimen reveals a large logarithmic spiral, whose smooth surface has a glassy sheen. On this fossil canvas, nature has painted its most fascinating colors. Flashes of intense red, orange, and gold run along the sutural lines, drawing almost calligraphic patterns that follow the growth of the animal's internal chambers. These color bursts are not uniform, but create a dynamic play that changes with the angle of light, offering a continually renewed perception of the object. The center of the spiral, or protoconch, stands out for its pearlescent brightness with cooler tones, from blue to violet, creating a fascinating contrast with the dominant warm tones.
