Set of three circular votive medallions in molded terracotta, Northern India, Ancient Bengal, Chandraketugarh type, Shunga / Early Historic period, 2nd–1st century BCE. Beautiful cohesive set of three small ancient terracotta medallions, today reunited on an elegant modern metal pedestal allowing simultaneous appreciation of their relief and patina variations. Each medallion adopts a characteristic structure: a wide rounded peripheral rim, a central field slightly recessed, and a prominent central knob, around which a radiating molded composition develops. The three examples belong to the same production tradition, while showing slight differences in diameter, thickness, design and relief depth. They are therefore related variants and not simple strictly identical repetitions. The decoration is rich and figurative, combining several zoomorphic, vegetal and probably anthropomorphic motifs distributed around the center. Various animals in profile and vegetal elements remain discernible. This radial organization gives the compositions the appearance of a small symbolic wheel, while inviting a cautious iconographic reading. The casting technique, small format, rim morphology and decorative vocabulary link these pieces to the corpus of ancient Bengal and Chandraketugarh terracotta, traditionally placed in the Early Historic / Shunga period, around the 2nd–1st centuries BCE. The surfaces offer tones ranging from pink-beige to gray-brown, with darker areas, sometimes almost blackish, particularly visible on certain edges and the back. The reliefs remain clearly readable despite ancient, progressive wear of the most projecting parts. The condition is good for this type of small-format archaeological object. There are small abrasions and edge nicks, a few micro-surface fissures and various old linear traces on the reverse. One medallion shows a radial crack localized at the lower rim, accompanied by a small peripheral flake, without visible detachment. No major structural damage or through crack is observed. The reverses, deliberately simpler, preserve traces of a manual finish as well as color and surface variations. The visible perforations correspond to the modern mounting on a plinth. Dimensions excluding base: Medallion 1: Ø 4.6 cm × thickness 1.4 cm Medallion 2: Ø 5 cm × thickness 1.8 cm Medallion 3: Ø 4.6 cm × thickness 1.6 cm Individual weights: 28.6 g; 31.9 g; 29.2 g. A balanced and decorative set of three ancient Bengal terracotta pieces, whose common presentation particularly well highlights the variations in relief, material and patina specific to each medallion. video link: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/upm01b59egcp42lvhr410/AA8xoe-UPwoGW9NB5K3nWQU?rlkey=eyd9pixrm9cjk125cuht23suy&dl=0
