Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 1010 The current owner (S.N.J. S.) purchased the Belt Buckle with Christian Cross from B.N. in Schiedam, the Netherlands. The previous owner, B.N. from Schiedam, stated that the object had been in his collection, but the date of acquisition was not provided. According to the previous owner, the object had previously formed part of a private collection in the Netherlands; the date of this earlier ownership is unknown. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: Belt fittings were important elements of dress during the Early Medieval period, serving both the practical purpose of fastening clothing and the more visible role of personal adornment. This bronze example combines an oval buckle frame with an integral plate terminating in a distinctly cross-shaped element. A circular perforation between the frame and terminal formed part of the functional construction of the fitting. The cross became one of the most recognisable symbols of Early Medieval Europe as Christianity expanded and became increasingly embedded within the societies that developed after the end of Roman rule in the West. Christian imagery appeared not only on explicitly religious objects but also on personal possessions, including jewellery, dress fittings and other small metalwork. On such objects, the cross could communicate Christian identity while simultaneously forming part of the decorative vocabulary of contemporary craftsmanship. During the 6th–8th centuries, metal belt fittings were produced in numerous regional forms across western and central Europe. Bronze was particularly suitable for these objects because it could be cast into compact and recognisable shapes and subsequently finished by hand. Buckles and associated fittings therefore provide important archaeological evidence for Early Medieval dress, metalworking traditions and the movement of styles between different communities. Without a documented archaeological find context, a more specific regional attribution or original ownership cannot be established for this example. Nevertheless, its combination of a functional buckle form and prominent cross-shaped terminal places it within the broader tradition of Early Medieval personal metalwork in which practical objects could also carry recognisable Christian symbolism. It forms a tangible connection to the changing material culture of post-Roman Europe, when objects worn as part of everyday dress could simultaneously express function, craftsmanship and religious identity."
