Funerary statuette mingqi in ceramic representing a court lady. Tang Dynasty (618–907) This elegant terracotta statuette depicts a standing court lady, arms folded on the abdomen. She is draped in a loose cloak falling in soft folds over a long robe. The surface of the piece, covered with a light engobe, retains traces of red polychromy, indicating the care given to the original coloring. The silhouette, with restrained sobriety, is distinguished by the coiffure of high braids formed into two buns, a characteristic of feminine taste under the Tang dynasty and attested in numerous representations of the period. This fashion, popularized during the 8th century, reflects a search for monumental elegance and an opulent beauty ideal, in keeping with the splendor of the Tang court. The representation of the woman, a figure of refinement and distinction, here illustrates the importance of feminine aesthetics in Tang culture, a reflection at once of an ideal of beauty and of a privileged social status. Mingqi were an integral part of the funerary furniture intended to accompany the deceased in the afterlife, ensuring the continuity of their social status and material comfort. Produced in the workshops of the great ceramic centers of Henan or Shaanxi, these objects testify to the economic prosperity and cosmopolitanism of Tang China, a period marked by intense exchanges along the Silk Road.
