Provenance: Arthur Tooth & Sons Ltd., London Literature: Léonce Bénédité, Albert Lebourg, Paris, 1923, p. 346, no. 1109 The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by François Lespinasse. Born in Normany, Lebourg was an integral member of the École de Rouen. During his lifetime, he produced a significant body of work particularly focussed on depictions of the Seine and the landscape around northern France. In 1876, Lebourg exhibited his paintings alongside Monet, Sisley and Renoir on the Boulevard Montmartre and went on to exhibit regularly alongside his fellow Impressionists during the 1870s and 1880s. He presented paintings of Algiers, where he had taken a teaching post in 1873, as well as Paris and Rouen. Like many of his contemporaries, he was particularly drawn to the Seine and its tributaries, taking inspiration from the luminous effect of the light on the water. His time in Algiers had further informed his treatment of his subject matter and the atmosphere of his landscapes. During his lifetime, Lebourg achieved notable critical acclaim and he was represented by prestigious Parisian galleries Mancini, Bernheim-Jeune, Paul Rosenberg and Georges Petit. His work is held in numerous public collections including the Musée d’Orsay and the Petit Palais in Paris and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen.
