1971 Dino 246 GT Série M - Delivered new in France on May 3, 1971 by Charles Pozzi - Retains its original engine - Same owner since 1989 - Well-documented early history, with servicing by the official dealer network from new - Extensive and documented mechanical and body restoration - Fewer than 8,000 km covered since the restoration was completed in 2009 - Rare and desirable Dino 246 GT Series M, one of only 507 examples produced - Complete with accessories and documentation Only 507 examples of the second or ‘M’ series of the Dino were built from 1970–71, far fewer than the number of ‘E’ series cars that followed. Chassis no. 01844 was part of this desirable series, and as the copy of a document from the manufacturer confirms, it was sold new in France on 3 May 1971 through the importer Charles Pozzi to Maurice Rapt, who lived in the Loir-et-Cher. The Dino, finished in ‘Rosso Dino’ with a ‘Nero’ interior, was registered as 48 QC 41. On 10 May, it had already covered 1397km and was given its first service, as well as having a prancing horse badge fitted to show the beautiful GT’s pedigree more clearly. On 9 June 1971, the car returned to the dealer network with 3470km recorded, for a service, the replacement of the right rear shock absorber, and to have a radio and a further Ferrari monogram (!) fitted. Its current keeper, a car repair specialist and owner of two garages, bought the car at auction in December 1989, fulfilling a dream, so highly had he always regarded the model. At the time, the car was registered in the Bouches-du-Rhône. From the start of the 1990s, the car underwent a detailed restoration, carried out in stages. First of all, the engine (which is matching numbers, according to Matthias Bartz) and gearbox were stripped down, the cylinders deglazed and the piston rings replaced; the core plugs and seals were changed, as were the valves (which are no longer sodium filled, for reasons of reliability), valve seats and guides. The gearbox seals were renewed and the synchro ring for second gear replaced. Naturally, the clutch disc and its associated mechanism were changed at the same time, while a stainless-steel exhaust was fabricated. The entire cooling system was thoroughly cleaned and the tubes connecting the engine to the radiator were replaced. The carburettors were overhauled in Italy and electronic ignition, invisible to the naked eye, was fitted. The running gear received the same attention. At the start of the 2000s, the body was stripped to bare metal, revealing a perfectly sound structure. The signs of a minor knock on the left front wing sometime in the past were made good on this occasion, before the car was given a complete respray in ‘Rosso Corsa 300’ acrylic paint, then polished. The result of this excellent work can be judged today from the quality of its preservation. Inside, the headlining was restored, the seats retrimmed and the door cards remade. The restoration was completed in 2009, and since then the car has been regularly and scrupulously maintained, covering less than 8000km. It comes with a jack, tool kit and protective cover, as well as the owner’s manual and two sets of keys. This splendid example is ready to be driven and demonstrates the care, knowledge and technical resources its owner had at his disposal to carry out this high-quality restoration and to fulfil and then live his dream: to enjoy one of the most beautiful GTs ever created.
