South America - Early Railway Development - a good early 20th century photograph album, documenting the building of the The Arica–La Paz railway in Chile (c. 1904-1913), the photographs probably taken by an amateur enthusiast, possibly an engineer on site, comprising rack railways (probably in the Lluta Valley), a burial/funeral, a tender labelled FCALP No. 265, baking bread/food preparation, living accommodation, bridges, station buildings, railroad workers, topographical views, steam engines, steam ships, a monument inauguration ceremony, military figures, indigenous portraits, high streets, landscapes, etc., pp. 24, comprising 96 photographs. Notes: : Inaugurated on May 13th 1913 as an engineering marvel, the Arica - La Paz railway line was commissioned by the Chilean government to compensate Bolivia for land lost during the 1879–1883 War of the Pacific, giving them access to the coast. It was built by the British company Sir John Jackson Ltd. A 43 km cog-rail (rack-and-pinion) section between the Central and Puquios stations were used to prevent trains from sliding backward on large inclines. It was the longest rack section in the world at the time. Conditions were brutal and thousands of workers suffered from oxygen deprivation while doing heavy physical labor in severe weather conditions, all of which is documented in this album.
