AN UNUSUAL GEORGE III BRASS MOUNTED GILT JAPANNED MUSICAL TABLE/BRACKET CLOCK ABEL PANCHAUD, LONDON, CIRCA 1775 The six pillar triple fusee bell-striking movement with plates measuring 8 by 6.25 inches and verge escapement regulated by short bob pendulum, the musical train playing four tunes on eight bells with ten hammers via a 2.75 inch long 1.5 inch diameter pinned cylinder transversely positioned to the upper left of the backplate, at every hour after the sounding of the hour bell, the tunes with automatic selection cycling through the week at four evenly spaced intervals via the day-of-the-week wheel, the backplate engraved with an unusual arrangement of symmetrical acanthus scrollwork to the centre within conforming spandrel decoration and a gadroon-leaf outer border, the 8 inch single sheet engraved brass break-arch Roman numeral dial with curved false bob aperture and signed Abel Panchaud, Oxford Street to centre, with Arabic five minutes to outer track and scroll pierced steel hands, the spandrel areas engraved with unusual generous Baroque style acanthus scroll infill with the upper continuing up into the arch to envelope the triple subsidiary dials, comprising central date-of-the-month flanked by subservient STRIKE/SILENT selection and day-of-the-week dials, the brass mounted gilt lacquered case with brass pineapple finial to the bell-top superstructure applied with brass mouldings and polychrome painted with Baroque scrollwork to the concave section, set on a box upstand decorated with overlapping floral swags flanked by further conforming finials, with double cavetto top mouldings over break-arch glazed door inset with brass fillet moulding bordering the dial aperture beneath mirror-backed foliate scroll pierced and engraved gilt brass upper quadrant frets, the door frame painted with floral sprays and flanked by canted angles applied with gilt brass female term mounts, the sides with generous hinged brass carrying handles over Baroque scroll painted infill issuing floral pendants flanking the concave-topped rectangular glazed aperture edged with a brass fillet moulding, the rear matching the front except for the brass fillet mouldings and gilt quadrant frets, on cavetto moulded skirt base fitted with generous scroll cast gilt brass feet. 62cm (24.5ins) high, 38cm (15ins) wide, 28cm (11ins) deep. Abel Panchaud is recorded in Baillie G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London 1764-84. The British Museum holds a trade card noting him as working from 'Oxford Street, facing North Audley Street'. The highly unusual decoration to the case of the current lot is reminiscent to that seen on a relatively rare group plate 18th century Venetian furniture. However, the fact that the present clock was acquired by the present owner in Spain suggests that the decoration may well be Iberian. There is no visible evidence of the clock having a previous different surface finish hence it would most likely appear that the current decoration was undertaken at the time the clock was made. It may well be that the clock was therefore ordered undecorated by a Continental client with the intention of executing the decoration in the destination country in order to blend-in with a particular decorative Scheme. The style of the engraving to the movement and dial also depart from the usual English designs of the period (see Dzik, Sunny ENGRAVING ON ENGLISH TABLE CLOCKS, Art on a Canvas of Brass within the chapter titled FRUIT AND FLOWER BASKETS pages 293-312) which would appear to further support the possibility that the present clock was a 'special order' for a European client. Condition Report: Movement is complete and appears free from visible alteration or noticeable replacements with the exception of the escape wheel which is probably a service replacement. The movement will run but is prone to stopping, the strike and music trains are in working condition with good sound/tone to all of the bells. The automatic tune selection is operational (along with the day-change for the date). The date-of-the-month and strike/silent functions are currently not working although their respective levers/operating detents are present hence is probably a case of being incorrectly set-up. The movement is generally a little dirty/discoloured hence a gentle clean/service will be required. The dial has had attention to tighten rivet-fitment of the dial feet which affects some of the spandrel engraving (most noticeable to the upper left). The fitments that support some of the underdial work attached to the rear of the plate are also visible to the centre. The surface was probably originally silvered, all hands are present and undamaged. The case is generally in very good condition with no structural defects, notable shrinkage etc. The top finial was originally elevated on a small plinth flanked by fretwork quadrants hence the presence of two shallow slots cut into the top panel either side of the finial. The decoration is generally in very good original condition with minimal losses or wear to the painted detail. Some of the gilding to the mouldings has been touched-in/strengthened otherwise the surface appears largely original with relatively minor age-related bumps, scuffs etc. Please see/request images which form an integral part of this description. Clock is complete with integral pendulum, winding key and a case key.
