A PAIR OF GEORGE SCOTTISH PROVINCIAL SILVER DISHES WILLIAM CRAW & JAMES HILL, CANONGATE CIRCA 1765-1769 With shaped borders, engraved with a crest and on a circular foot 14.5cm diameter 330g (10.6 oz) This is the crest associated with the arms of the Earls of Breadalbane and Holland in the Peerage of Scotland. At the time of assay (1770) the title was held by John CAMPBELL (1696-1782) 3rd Earl, who had been MP for Saltash and later for Orford. William Craw entered into partnership with James Hill in 1760 once he finished his apprenticeship and became free. The partnership was dissolved in around 1769 when William Craw moved to Dumfries where he continued to work as a goldsmith, and James Hill seems to have retired. See Silver & Gold Marks by Sir Charles Jackson page 594 for the marks used on this pair of dishes. Provenance: Sale, Dowells Ltd, Edinburgh, The Contents of Taymouth Castle, 24-29 April 1922. There were originally four of these dishes in the collection of Sir Gavin Campbell, 1st Marquis Of Breadalbane (1871 -1922), dispersed by Dowells of Edinburgh in 1922. Sir Gavin assembled one of the largest collections of 17th and 18th century Scottish silver, and many of the pieces in his collection were engraved with the Campbell crest.
