Symonds, 'Furniture in the Collection of Mr Geoffrey Blackwell', Apollo Vol XXIII. no. 136, 23rd April 1936Geoffrey Blackwell OBE (1884-1943) was the director of the food company Crosse and Blackwell, which dates back to 1706 and was one of the first to receive a Royal Warrant from the newly-crowned Queen Victoria in 1837. He collected Georgian furniture as well as modern British art and was closely advised by renowned furniture historian R. W. Symonds on his furniture acquisitions. Symonds, who wrote an entire article in Apollo on Blackwell's furniture collection, advised some of the most important furniture collectors in the early twentieth century, including Percival Griffiths, James Thursby Pelham and E.B. Moller; many of the pieces in their collections are referenced or illustrated in 'The Dictionary of English Furniture', Percy Macquoid and Ralph Edwards, 1924.Furniture belonging to Blackwell that has appeared at auction in recent years have achieved strong prices. A tripod table that once belonged to Percival Griffiths and then Geoffrey Blackwell, was sold by a descendant of Blackwell, Christie's London, 14th June 2001, lot 35 (£135,750); in the same sale, a George II walnut and parcel gilt mirror was sold by the late John Blackwell, lot 30 (£80,750). Another tripod table, but with a plain moulded top was also sold by a descendant of Blackwell, Christie's London, 24th November 2005, lot 10 (£102,000). Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Generally good, and of good colour, structurally sound.The top shows some fine shrinkage cracks, some minor lifting banding and edging, some loses of stringing, and inlay.Signs of additional rub blocks, perhaps to strengthen the fixing of the top to the base, signs of historic repairs to the underside No keys are present but all locks are unlockedThe width of the table is 182.5cm wide. The width between the two front legs is 98cm.
