Six Dutch coin spoons with wall rack – in the tradition of ‘silent resistance’ Small spoons with a big story. This decorative set of six coin spoons with accompanying wall rack combines inventive craftsmanship with Dutch coin history and the symbolism of the so-called ‘silent resistance’. The spoons have gracefully faceted stems, with a small Dutch coin on the top and a larger coin shaped into the spoon bowl on the bottom. On the coins you can see the Dutch lion, the inscription ‘Koningrijk der Nederlanden’ and various years. The shield-shaped wall rack has a scalloped top edge, copper-colored decorative nails and two hanging loops. The warm metal of the rack forms a beautiful contrast with the silver-colored spoons. Historical background During the German occupation, Dutch coins were used to make jewelry and small everyday objects. Such items could express allegiance to the Netherlands and loyalty to the royal house: a modest, symbolic form of resistance. The War Museum Rotterdam preserves a comparable coin spoon, dated 1940–1945, and describes this type of coin work as a form of passive resistance and loy dalty to the royal house. This set fits within that tradition. The exact date of manufacture of these six spoons and the rack has not been determined separately; the years on the coins are coin years. A characterful collectible for enthusiasts of Dutch history, coin work and war memorabilia. Also as wall decoration, the complete presentation is a striking eye-catcher.
