Zaccaria Dal Bò (1872-1935) - Scena Veneziana con figure...

Fascinating oil on panel by the Venetian painter Zaccaria Dal Bò (Venice, 1872–1935), a work characterized by a particularly rich painterly material and a lively Venetian setting. The painting depicts an elegant outdoor view, probably a garden or a Venetian monumental area, animated by small figures in 18th-century clothing. In the foreground a couple stands out: the male figure with a large tricorne and a richly dressed crimson robes constitutes immediately the chromatic fulcrum of the composition, flanked by a second figure dressed in darker tones. In the background, other figures stroll beside the garden wall, interrupted by pillars topped with statues. Particularly suggestive is the contrast between the warm luminosity of the wall and the ground and the dense, deep vegetation, built through greens, blues, grays and pinkish touches. The sky, barely visible through the treetops, is resolved through quick light brushstrokes that impart movement and brightness to the scene. One of the most interesting aspects of the work is precisely the strongly tactile brushwork: color is applied with dense, robust, clearly perceptible strokes, almost molded on the surface. In close detail one can appreciate the freedom of Dal Bò’s gesture: trees, statues, architectures and characters are not defined through meticulous drawing, but take shape thanks to the juxtaposition of short, vigorous touches of color. The result is an immediate and atmospheric painting, particularly effective when viewed from the proper distance. The choice of 18th-century costume figures also gives the work an evocative, almost theatrical character, recalling the imagery of Galant Venice, aristocratic strolls, gardens and the social life of the Serenissima. The work is signed bottom right “Z. Dal Bò,” a clearly legible signature well integrated into the painting surface. The artist Zaccaria Dal Bò was born in Venice on December 13, 1872 and died there on September 29, 1935. He trained at the Institute of Fine Arts of Venice and was active in the vibrant Venetian artistic environment from the late 19th century to the early decades of the 20th century. His career was accompanied by participation in important exhibitions: he took part in several editions of the Venice Biennale, including those of 1903, 1907, 1909 and 1910. In 1907 he presented Paese triste, in 1909 La neve and in 1910 Fondamenta a Burano and Un angolo del lago. He also participated in the Universal Exposition of the Centenary in Buenos Aires in 1910 and the National Exhibition of Fine Arts of Brera in 1912, exhibiting also outside Italy. Historical documentation also testifies to Dal Bò as an excellent draftsman: in the context of the Venetian exhibitions of 1913 are recalled works such as Rio San Rocco and Palazzo Van Axel. His production mainly includes landscapes, Venetian views and panoramas, in which the city and the Veneto territory are interpreted through a free, luminous painting sensitive to atmospheric effects. The painting presented here is therefore an interesting example of Zaccaria Dal Bò’s production, in which the charm of historic Venice is reinterpreted through a decidedly modern and tactile brushwork. The painting is enriched by a gilded and shaped wooden frame, of antique taste, which pleasantly accompanies the warm tones of the work. Signs and traces of time compatible with the age are present; therefore, observers are invited to carefully study all photographs, which form an integral part of the description and document details, signature, painterly material, frame and verso of the work. Technique: oil on panel Author: Zaccaria Dal Bò (Venice, 1872–1935) Signature: signed “Z. Dal Bò” on bottom right Panel dimensions: 35 × 23.8 cm With frame dimensions: 46 × 35.5 cm Era: early decades of the 20th century A work of notable decorative and collecting charm, particularly interesting for the richness of the painterly material, the liveliness of the figures and the atmosphere of 18th-century Venice evoked through the sensibility of a Venetian painter of the early twentieth century.
