Yvan Theys (1936-2005) - Liggende vrouw wit

This expressive work by the Belgian artist Yvan Theys shows a seated female figure, portrayed in a dynamic interplay of strong lines, vivid color accents and light, almost transparent surfaces. The elongated limbs and angular forms give the composition a special tension, while the loose, energetic brush and crayon strokes evoke a sense of movement. Red, green and yellow interrupt the predominantly white and gray color palette and intensify the vitality of the image. Here Theys balances between figuration and abstraction: the human body remains recognizable, yet is simultaneously distorted into an expressive whole. The work, dated 1995 in the bottom right, testifies to a free and personal visual language in which emotion, color and form are central. About the artist Yvan Theys Yvan Theys (1936, Marke – 2005, Warcoing) was an influential Belgian painter, draftsman, graphic artist and sculptor. He studied at Sint-Lucas in Doornik (Tournai), where he later taught. In the 1960s he evolved into one of the founders of New Figuration, an art movement that combined recognizable human figures with abstract and expressive elements. His work shows influences from, among others, Pablo Picasso, Expressionism and the CoBrA movement, but is distinguished by a clearly personal style. In 1964 he received the prestigious Prize of Rome. The human figure, interpersonal relationships, and psychological tensions form recurring themes in his oeuvre. Especially in his later work, Theys experimented with fragmented bodily forms, powerful linework and contrasting colors. His art holds a special place in postwar Belgian painting. Technique: Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 40 × 50 cm (work) and 42 × 52 cm (including frame).
