He began his training at the Kharkov Art College. After the war he entered the History and Battle faculty of the Kharkov Art Institute. His teachers were M.G. Deregus and P.I. Kotov. He graduated from the institute in 1951. He has participated in art exhibitions since 1953. He took part in the realization of dioramas for the local history museums of Melitopol and Sumy. In 1977 there was a solo show of the artist in Zaporozhye. The works of Yu.A. Smirnov are present in museums, galleries and private collections in Ukraine and abroad."
