He frequently held exhibitions in Lima, always focusing on themes from the Amazon rainforest region. He also visited the city of Arequipa in the 1960s, as noted by historian Hélard Fuentes Pastor. The art of César Calvo de Araujo belongs to narrative and figurative realism. He drew his scenes directly from life in the jungle or the port city of Iquitos and other places in the Amazon region; his painting is characterized by humid gray tones. In 2015, a retrospective of Calvo de Araujo’s work was held at the British Cultural Center in Lima, curated by Christian Bendayán. His best-known book is Paiche, described by himself in its prologue as a socialist novel, written in a mixture of formal Spanish and Amazonian dialectal Spanish.
