Tektites (from the Greek tektos, melted) are natural glass objects formed by the impact of large meteorites on Earth's surface. Tektites are among the driest minerals known, with an average water content of 0.005%. This is very rare, since most of the craters where tektites formed were underwater before the impact. Zircon partly fused has also been found inside some tektites. This, together with the water content, suggests that tektites formed under very high temperature and pressure (similar to that required to form diamond). Indochinites, like the one in this lot, formed from the impact of a large meteorite 800,000 years ago, according to the latest studies. The collision was brutal, such that molten material covered about 10% of the Earth's surface, with indochinites found even in Antarctica.
