Writing tablet - dome-top casket - Wood, Copper, Mother of pearl

Offered: a very solidly built and high-quality Victorian handcrafted chest from the third quarter of the 19th century (ca. 1850-1880). This so-called dome-top casket or barrel-top model shines with its rich decoration and is a splendid example of high-quality British artisanal craftsmanship from the golden age of the Victorian era. Craftsmanship & Materials: The exterior of the chest is around intricately decorated with broad bands of geometric inlay (marquetry), made from ultra-thin strips of natural straw veneer (straw-work) and contrasting tones of wood veneer. The sleek, mathematical chevron- and cross-motifs show strong stylistic similarities to the famous Tunbridge Ware. The domed lid and the front around the keyhole are inlaid with hexagonal mosaic plaques of glossy, iridescent mother-of-pearl. The interior opens with the original brass hinges and reveals a fully wooden interior with the authentic compartment layout and a raised shelf at the front. Condition The chest is in beautiful, honest antique condition with a deep, authentic patina. The original lock is present, but currently there is no key. For the enthusiast, this is easily resolved: a specialist key-maker or locksmith can later craft a suitably antique-style key. Due to the great age of over 150 years there are normal signs of aging and use. This includes superficial scratches on the wood, light natural movement at the seal of the lid and minimal historical imperfections/small chips at the edges of the fine veneer. The original green protective fabric on the underside has largely worn away over time, which contributes to the historical character. Study the detail photos carefully; they form an essential part of the condition assessment. Provenance Great Britain (UK). This chest has a beautiful, well-documented history (provenance). Inside the chest is an original handwritten receipt (bon no. 1697) dated 21 October 1970 from the renowned British antique gallery “Leonard of Liverpool” (located at the luxury shopping street 69 Bold Street in Liverpool and 1 Sydney Street/Fulham Road in London). The receipt is in the name of a well-to-do female collector (Miss Cook) living in the art-deco complex Russell Court in London. The chest has served for decades to store these valuable purchase documents and was recently acquired directly at an auction in England. Dimensions (cm) & Weight • Length: approx. 30 cm • Depth: 24 cm • Height: 15 cm • Weight: 1640 grams (1.64 kg) Shipping method The item is prepared for transport with the utmost care. The chest is wrapped very carefully and thickly in protective bubble wrap and then placed in a sturdy cardboard box with ample extra shock-absorbing padding. The shipment is sent fully insured, registered, and equipped with a Track & Trace code via a reliable international courier service, so you can track the delivery precisely.
