Monumental Ancient Indonesian Hand Mill (Gilingan Batu) on a Solid Trough Table – Coffee Table / Wabi-Sabi – 120 cm A remarkably characterful and monumental folk art piece from Indonesia (Bali/Java). This antique hand mill, locally known as Gilingan Batu, is fully complete and in a beautiful, authentic condition. The object was traditionally used in the countryside for artisanal grinding of grain, corn, or coffee beans. The set consists of the two original, hand-cut millstones (the runner and the bedstone), made from locally volcanic rock. The inner surfaces of the stones reveal the stunning, deeply incised radial grooves that pushed the ground material toward the outer edge. The top stone features the original side hole where the wooden handle was once attached. The stones rest in an impressive, heavy trough table that has been hand-carved from a single solid piece of tropical hardwood (monoxyl). Over the decades the wood has developed a fabulous, deep, well-worn patina. The whole sits on a sturdy, authentic base with primitively inlaid legs. With its generous length of 120 cm and depth of 70 cm, this unusually large specimen is not only a museum-quality piece but also perfectly functional as a unique coffee table or eye-catcher in a high-end Wabi-Sabi, minimalist, or country interior.
