Gabonese Punu wooden mask This wooden mask is associated with the Punu, a people of southern Gabon, recognized for the finesse of their sculptural art and for depictions of faces with harmonious features. Punu masks are characterized in particular by carefully modeled faces, regular features, and elaborate hairstyles, sometimes represented by sculpted volumes at the back of the head. They are traditionally linked to ceremonial practices and to the cultural life of the communities. Carved in wood, this mask highlights the precision of the artisanal work and the refined aesthetics of Punu sculpture. The softness of the features and the balance of proportions give the piece an elegant and distinctive expression. This contemporary work sits in the continuity of the Punu artistic tradition and testifies to the richness of Gabon’s cultural heritage.
