*** Please note the description of this lot has changed *** Wilde (Oscar) The Picture of Dorian Gray, one of 250 copies signed by the author, printed on Dutch hand-made paper, watermarked VanGelder, bookplate on front pastedown, slight surface abrasions to upper hinge, light scattered spotting, staining to one or two pp., mostly marginal, original bevelled boards, rebacked in parchment, spine gilt, upper cover with gilt design by Charles Ricketts, t.e.g., others uncut, rubbed, a few light scuff marks, spine sunned, [Mason 329], 4to, 1891. *** The author's first novel, originally published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in July 1890. Six new chapters are added to this first appearance in book form, with many other additions and variations. Violently attacked by the critics when it appeared, this quintessential tale of decadence did Wilde a great deal of harm upon its publication.
