A ceremonial feast cap from the Lake Sentani area of Papua, made of tapa cloth and decorated with cassowary feathers and forest seeds. The barkcloth forms the body of the cap, while the feathers add texture and volume. The seeds provide contrasting decorative accents, bringing together several natural materials in a distinctive piece of ceremonial headwear. We acquired this cap locally after witnessing a ceremony in the area around Lake Sentani. This direct connection to the occasion of its acquisition adds particular interest to its provenance and places it within the living ceremonial culture of the region. Made from plant fibres, seeds and feathers, the cap is an appealing example of the use of locally available materials in Papuan personal adornment. Its interest lies both in the combination of materials and in its documented history of acquisition following a ceremony witnessed firsthand by the collectors.
