We present an extraordinary Chinese decorative rug-tapestry, 100% handmade in pure silk, conceived as a genuine piece of textile art and wall decoration. The composition is based on an abstract expressionist painting by Wassily Kandinsky from the 1920s–1930s, suggesting a landscape with a boat and different figures represented in an abstract manner. The work blends geometric and expressive forms in muted tones and black, on a spectacular background of yellow and gold hues that evokes the glow of a sunrise or sunset. This piece was created by Chinese master artisans roughly between 1970 and 1980, following traditional manual techniques. The use of pure silk lends the surface a characteristic shine and luminosity, making the tones and nuances vary depending on the direction of light. The rug was specially conceived as an artistic tapestry for wall decoration. On its top, it features three woven loops designed to insert a rod and allow hanging the piece. The loops can also be folded inward to achieve a more discreet and practically invisible installation. The piece also bears the signature “Kandinsky” woven into the rug itself, visible in one corner. Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist, active in Germany during the late Belle Époque and the interwar period. He is considered one of the great pioneers of abstraction in Western art. He was a professor at the famous Bauhaus school of art and architecture from 1922 until its closure by the Nazis in 1933. He later moved to France, where he remained for the rest of his life. He obtained French nationality in 1939 and produced some of the most notable works of his career there. Measurements: 92 × 70 cm.
