Wall sconce (2) - Gilt brass - Antique- Art Nouveau

An elegant matching pair of antique Italian Art Nouveau (Stile Liberty) wall sconces, dating to approximately 1900. These substantial wall lights are distinguished by their long, sculptural brass arms, projecting approximately 52 cm from the wall when fitted with their decorative glass shades. Their impressive proportions create a striking architectural presence, quite different from smaller, conventional wall sconces. The elaborate cast-brass decoration features flowing scrollwork, foliage and floral detailing characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement and the Italian Belle Époque. Each light carries a large, beautifully moulded glass tulip shade with softly frosted surfaces and gracefully ruffled edges. Both shades survive together with the matching brass fittings. Particularly attractive is the surviving original gilded finish. Over more than a century, the exposed brass surfaces have developed a rich golden-brown patina, while recessed and protected areas retain more of their original gilding. This natural variation gives the pair an appealing depth and authentic antique character. Condition Both wall lights are in good antique condition, with age-related wear consistent with their period. The original gilding shows natural wear and patination. Both glass shades are in excellent condition. The electrical fittings are present but have not been tested. Inspection and, if necessary, rewiring by a qualified electrician are recommended before installation.
