For sale: A stunning and characteristic French Henri II regulator wall clock (open case / cartel) from the late 19th century (circa 1880-1900). This clock is in remarkably complete condition and exudes the pure elegance of Paris around the turn of the century. Origin & Magnificent Historical Context: The authentic sticker on the inside is the original shop or distribution label and confirms exactly the provenance and period of the clock. The Shop: The clock was sold at the time by "Au Chalet", a clockmaker and French specialty shop specialized in woodcarving (Horlogerie Bois Sculptés). Location: The shop was located at 17, Boulevard Poissonnière in Paris. This is a well-known, chic boulevard in central Paris where, around 1900, many luxury shops and artisans were based. Circa 1880–1900, Paris’s Grands Boulevards were the absolute 'place to be' for the well-to-do middle class. Boulevard Poissonnière was filled with theaters, music halls, and luxury specialty shops. Stores like "Au Chalet" specifically targeted wealthy Parisians and tourists seeking artisanal woodcarving and high-quality timepieces. This label gives the clock a wonderful historical context; it was indeed purchased in late 19th-century Paris as a luxury object. Style & Construction of the Case: The clock is crafted in the French Henri II style (French Neorenaissance), characterized by stately hand-carved walnut or oak and a clean, symmetrical architectural layout [GD1]: The Crown (Top): An open-wrought wooden balustrade with the original decorative wooden knobs (turrets) at the corners. The Middle Section: The round wooden surround flanked by turned columns. Featuring an authentic cartouche dial, with the Roman numerals set on separate white enamel plaques. The Base (Console): A tapering wooden base that visually anchors the clock to the wall. The wooden spindle-work at the bottom is fully intact, including the hanging decorative knobs behind which the fusee pendulum swings beautifully. Movement & Technical Specifications : Movement: High-quality mechanical spring-driven movement. Power Reserve: 8-day movement (wound once per week with the key through the two holes in the dial). Escapement: Reliable anchor escapement for stable timekeeping. Strike: Strikes via a traditional saw/disc hammering mechanism on a steel gong spring. Produces a characteristic, warm and deep chime (one strike per half-hour, and the full number of strikes on the hour). .Condition and Accessories: The wooden case is in very beautiful, solid condition with a lovely, authentic patina appropriate to the clock’s age. This lot is offered with an extremely complete package including: Original pendulum Associated winding key A unique opportunity for antique horology collectors and lovers of French elegance to acquire a top piece with demonstrable, documented Parisian history!
