Vlaamse school (XIX)

Flemish school, 19th century, Descent from the Cross after Peter Paul Rubens, possibly in the circle/after Bruno Boucquillon (Kortrijk, 1816–1878). Possible ecclesiastical origin West Flanders; Gistel is a particularly interesting lead. The presentation is almost certainly a copy/after Rubens’ famous Descent from the Cross in the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral in Antwerp. The composition is very specific: Christ is lowered diagonally in the white shroud, John stands in red at the bottom right, Mary in blue on the left, and Mary Magdalene sits at the bottom with her golden hair. The gray back may indeed fit a painting on a metal plate, possibly zinc. That makes my note “print on a zinc plate” interesting, but I would not catalog it for now as a normal etching/print. The front shows a paint layer with craquelure and clear painterly modeling. It could rather be a painted reproduction on metal. That kind of works does exist: Belgian restoration data, for example, mention 19th‑century paintings in which oil paint on canvas is mounted on zinc. probably 19th century, possibly the second half of the 19th century. I did not want to have it restored or overpainted yet. The current damage can provide information about age and technique. Can be restored or not.
