Viking Group of Five Iron Arrowheads (No reserve price)

Group of Five Viking Iron Arrowheads Circa 10th-11th century AD A fine group of five iron arrowheads with elongated blades of varying proportions, including broad leaf-shaped and narrower lanceolate examples. The blades have tapering cutting edges, pointed tips and pronounced shoulders, with some displaying a central ridge. Each extends into a slender tang intended for insertion into a wooden arrow shaft. The Vikings were Scandinavian seafarers, merchants, warriors and settlers whose activities transformed northern Europe between the late 8th and 11th centuries AD. Originating principally from present-day Denmark, Norway and Sweden, they established trading networks extending from the British Isles and the North Atlantic to the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic world. Their exceptionally advanced shipbuilding techniques enabled them to navigate both open seas and shallow inland rivers, reaching as far west as Newfoundland in North America, approximately five centuries before Columbus. Viking merchants exchanged furs, amber, walrus ivory and enslaved people for silver, silk, glass and other luxury goods. Size: 11.5cm x 3cm x 0.8cm (set of 6) Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
