rare French Art Deco ceramic ashtray (also usable as a vide-poche or collector's item), designed in the 1920s/1930s. The object features a beautifully stylized, dark-glazed pug (or French bulldog) curiously leaning over its feeding bowl, which serves as the ashtray compartment. The piece is executed in a typical Art Deco style with a cream-colored base provided with the characteristic fine craquelé glaze (faïence craquelée). The dog is glazed in a deep dark brown/black and finished with hand-painted white accents at the eyes and a red tongue. The underside is fully and very sharply marked in the unglazed clay, indicating an early, authentic pressing: FRANCE Editions Etling Paris (Edmond Etling, the renowned art editor at Rue de Paradis in Paris). Marcel Guillard (Signature of the celebrated French ceramist/studio head, 1896-1932). J. Lyseo (Signature of the master designer/modeler belonging to this series). Condition General: In good, original vintage condition with a beautifully distributed craquelure. The glaze on the dog has a stunning deep gloss. Note: There is a small chip on the upper corner edge of the craquelé base (see detail photo). This is a typical aging characteristic for this type of porous interwar earthenware. The damage is minimal, does not distract from the appearance of the figurine and barely detracts from its decorative and historical collectible value. No restorations. Dimensions Height 10.5 cm Width 15.5 cm Depth 7.5 cm
