Victorian brass skeleton clock timepiece by Smith & Sons, Clerkenwell, retailed by W.F. Brown, Gloucester, the brass frame with a silvered and engraved Roman numeral chapter ring, blued steel hands, with a pair of cast gilt metal eagles over a pair of flanked gilt metal recumbent lions, bearing inscribed silvered retailer plaque, single chain fusee eight day movement, upon an oval marble stepped base beneath a glass dome,18" excluding the dome, 23" including the dome (with a triple rod pendulum) ** For similar reference see Derek Roberts - British Skeleton Clocks, Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, 1987, P.127 ** J. Smith & Sons are recorded as working as clockmakers in St. John's Square, Clerkenwell, circa 1850-1900. They were one of two clockmakers who probably produced more skeleton clocks than all the other makers put together. The Smiths regularly produced catalogues illustrating some of their skeleton clocks and exhibited their clocks at the Great Exhibition in 1851
