Tutte le aste / Veicoli / Vespa 50 Special - Technical Drawing - Frame - Design

An urban icon in its mature stylistic form. Official document and presentation of the Vespa 50 Special in its final production stage, at the end of the 1970s. By then, the little Vespa was no longer just a youth vehicle: it was part of the Italian and European cultural landscape, established as a symbol of everyday freedom and timeless design. The 1978 50 Special maintained the essence that made it famous —monocoque steel body, compact dimensions, and the distinctive square headlight— but incorporated small technical and finish evolutions typical of the era. Its aesthetics blended functional simplicity with an unmistakable character: clean lines, a protective shield, and that silhouette that seemed to float lightly among the urban traffic. Under the seat beat the classic 2-stroke single-cylinder 49 cc air-cooled engine, paired with a manual transmission on the left handlebar. In these final versions, many units came with a four-speed gear box, delivering a more elastic and city-friendly response. It wasn’t a machine of numbers, but of sensations: a high-pitched sound, mechanical vibration, and a lightness that made every trip agile and spontaneous. In the vibrant cultural ferment of the late 70s, the 50 Special became an inseparable companion of students, workers, and young people seeking independence without giving up style. It was economical, robust, and easy to maintain, but above all it was a quiet statement of identity: practical, modern, and authentic. Today, the Vespa 50 Special from the late 1970s is one of the most sought-after versions by collectors and vintage culture enthusiasts. It represents the perfect balance between tradition and evolution within the Vespa universe: a small machine that encapsulates an entire era of simple mobility, Italian character, and freedom on two wheels.
