That the finest green mineral on Earth by far, the rich, vibrant, living green color of malachite makes it unique in the mineral kingdom. Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral and occurs in a variety of forms, such as botryoidal, fibrous, or stalactitic masses in fractures and voids, deep underground, where the water table and hydrothermal fluids provide the means for chemical deposition. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system; individual crystals, though rare, form as slender, acicular needles.
