Vase - Glass - Jugendstil

Extremely Rare Art Nouveau Vase – Ruby Red, Black and Gold Geometric Decoration – Sweden or Bohemia, circa 1915–1920 An exceptionally striking and unusual example of early twentieth-century Swedish decorative ceramics, attributed to the celebrated artist and designer Arthur Percy (1886–1976), one of the most influential figures in the development of Scandinavian modern art and design. This magnificent spherical vase immediately captivates with its brilliant ruby-red glaze and extraordinary geometric decoration in shimmering gold, deep black and warm ivory. It resemles also drafts from Michael Powolny . Its luxurious colour scheme, bold ornamental composition and beautifully balanced proportions evoke the glamour of early European Art Deco while retaining the distinctive elegance of Scandinavian decorative arts. A remarkable example of early geometric modernism, combining artistic sophistication, exquisite colour and an almost architectural sense of ornament. An Extraordinary Geometric Composition The vase is decorated with an exceptionally sophisticated arrangement of intersecting diagonals, elongated triangles, diamonds and sweeping curved lines. Bold black elements, delicately framed in ivory, contrast dramatically with the luminous ruby-red background, while the metallic gold detailing lends the entire composition an almost jewel-like brilliance. At the centre of the ornament, the geometric elements converge into a small diamond-shaped motif, creating a fascinating sense of symmetry, balance and architectural precision. The decoration is not simply applied to the surface. Its intersecting lines emphasise the curvature of the vessel, transforming the rounded body into a dynamic three-dimensional composition. Particularly remarkable is the almost avant-garde character of the design, which reflects the emergence of geometric abstraction and the radical artistic innovations of the early twentieth century. The composition combines the refinement of traditional decorative arts with the striking visual language of modernism. The brilliant red surface appears almost luminous, while the gold ornamentation catches the light and reveals the remarkable complexity of the geometric composition. Viewed from different angles, the intersecting triangles, diamonds and curved elements create constantly changing visual relationships. The resulting effect is both elegant and surprisingly modern. The vase would make a spectacular decorative accent in an Art Nouveau interior, a sophisticated contemporary setting or a collection of early European modernist ceramics. An Appealing Piece for Collectors What makes this vase particularly captivating is the unusual combination of an intensely coloured glaze, luxurious metallic decoration and uncompromising geometric design. The ornament possesses an almost architectural quality, reflecting the artistic experimentation that accompanied the transition from traditional decorative art to modern design. The underside retains a hand-applied gold-coloured numerical inscription, illustrated in the accompanying photographs. The visible characteristics of the glaze and decoration contribute to the individual character of this fascinating vintage piece. A highly distinctive work of decorative art, offering a compelling combination of colour, geometry and sculptural elegance.
