Stunning Chinese bronze vase with red lacquer, dating to the first half of the 20th century. Finely handcrafted, featuring a body finely hand-carved with traditional floral motifs (peonies) and geometric patterns. The cinnabar lacquer technique is one of the most celebrated and ancient decorative arts in Chinese tradition, in which multiple layers of red lacquer are stacked and subsequently carved in relief; the interior is glazed. This vase was purchased in China in the first half of the 20th century and comes from a private collection in Rome. Dimensions are 19.8 cm high by 10.5 cm and it weighs 455 g. The vase sits on a classic circular dark wood carved base, included, measuring 3.6 cm high by 6.5 cm in diameter and weighing 60 g. Total weight 515 g. Excellent condition. Some signs of wear.
