2 hagiographies from Bruges 1686-1720 [Giovanni Battista Rinuccini] Wonderful and fortunate mission to England and Scotland or life of the most venerable P. Archangelus of Scotland, Capuchin. Formerly Georgius, Earl of Lesley, a true North Star, set forth in this our age in the darkest night of the wandering heresy, toward the English and Scots. Exhibiting the movent reasons that brought him to abandon heresy, to take on the habit of the Capuchins, etc. First described in Italian by the archbishop and prince of Ferme, afterwards in French by the reverend Fr. Franciscus Barraut, and now in Flemish by Fr. Gregorius of Bruges, Capuchin preacher. Brugge, Joos vander Meulen / Gent, Cornelis Meyer, 1686; [xii]+243+[1] pp Half-leather binding (14.5x9 cm, missing part of the spine), stained title page, scattered spots The Italian bishop Giovanni Battista Rinuccini (1592-1653) became known for his diplomatic representation in Ireland and Scotland during the Irish Confederate Wars. During his stay on the British Isles he gained insight into Scotland, which helped him in writing his most famous book ‘The Scottish Friar’. This book is a tale about the life and ecclesiastical history of George Leslie, a Scottish monk. The translator, Gregorius van Brugge (1639-1706), born Jan-Baptist Grenier, was a Bruges Capuchin and hagiographer. Den H. Members paid an annual ‘death debt’ of 5 Francs, whereby it was promised that upon their death a solemn Requiem Mass would be celebrated but also prayers for all deceased members throughout the year.
