Valladolid School of the 17th Century, Circle of Gregorio Fernández

Valladolid School of the 17th Century, Circle of Gregorio Fernández

Descriptio Carved, polychromed, gilded, and brocaded wood, with glass eyes. Dimensions: 96 x 47 x 32 cm. This sculpture represents Saint Catherine of Alexandria, one of the most venerated saints in the Christian tradition, identifiable by the presence of her principal iconographic attribute, the wheel of steel, the instrument of her martyrdom. The image is conceived with a marked monumentality and a profound devotional sense, characteristics that directly recall the finest tradition of 17th-century Castilian sculpture. The figure presents an elegant compositional arrangement, enriched by ample folds of pronounced volume and meticulous polychromy that combines with richly ornamented gilded and brocaded areas. The face displays a serene and contemplative expression, while the glass eyes contribute to intensifying the sense of naturalism and physical presence, one of the most characteristic features of Spanish Baroque sculpture. The work shows clear affinities with the production of the circle of Gregorio Fernández, considered the most important sculptor of the Valladolid school and one of the key figures of European Baroque sculpture. His artistic language, characterized by the extraordinary realism of the figures, the emotional intensity, and the masterful technical quality of the carving, exerted a decisive influence on numerous workshops and sculptors active in Castile throughout the 17th century. Elements characteristic of this artistic style are recognizable in this image, especially in the treatment of drapery, the delicacy of the flesh tones, the expressive intensity of the face, and the meticulous execution of the decorative details. The combination of carving, polychromy, gilding, and brocade also reveals the collaboration of specialists in the different phases of execution, following the common practice of the great Castilian workshops of the period. Due to its stylistic characteristics and quality of execution, the work constitutes a remarkable example of devotional sculpture from the Valladolid school of the 17th century and of the extraordinary artistic legacy generated around the figure of Gregorio Fernández. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
