Val Saint Lambert - René Delvenne - Vase - twist - Crystal - Large Twisted Vase

Val Saint-Lambert – Grand vase “Torsade” in amethyst crystal – Model No. 542 (attributed) – 1957 Catalogue – Belgium A large sculptural model from the Belgian crystal house Magnificent and imposing vase in amethyst crystal attributed to the prestigious Belgian crystal maker Val Saint-Lambert, dating from the mid-20th century. With a height of 28 cm, a wide neck of 22 cm, and a remarkable weight of 5.7 kg, this piece stands out for its generous proportions, its spectacular helical decoration, and its gorgeous cranberry-rose color with deep amethyst nuances. Its sculptural design, combining thick ascending torsades with a broadly flared neck, perfectly illustrates the modern, expressive aesthetics of glassmaking from the 1950s. A documented identification supported by a 1957 historical catalogue The interest of this piece also lies in its close alignment with an historical Val Saint-Lambert document dated September 15, 1957, intended for the American market. This catalogue lists a vase named “Torsade,” offered in two sizes: * Reference 555: height of 6½ inches, or about 16.5 cm. * Reference 542: height of 11 inches, or about 28 cm. The height of this example therefore precisely matches that of the large model No. 542. The silhouette, the torsaded decor, and the proportions are also elements of correspondence with this historical reference. This concordance allows for a documented identification of the vase as the large “Torsade” model, probably reference 542, without claiming an individual certification of the piece. A reproduction of the historical plate can be consulted in addition to the photographs. Source: Val Saint-Lambert, American catalogue of 1957, “Vases” section, page 15, model Torsade. The model is sometimes associated with René Delvenne in commercial descriptions. However, in the absence of nominative documentation confirming this authorship, no definitive attribution to this designer is claimed. A true sculpture of light The vase exhibits exceptional chromatic intensity. Its upper portion reveals rich cranberry rose and amethyst tones, gradually transitioning to a clearer and brighter crystal in the lower part. Powerful helicoidal twists traverse the entire surface, creating a continuous upward movement. These reliefs capture and reflect light from different angles, revealing a multitude of nuances, from bright pink to deep purple. The broad flared neck harmoniously extends the body’s movements and gives the whole a particularly elegant silhouette. Thanks to its thickness and substantial mass, the crystal produces beautiful depth and transparency effects. Depending on its placement and lighting, the vase subtly changes appearance, offering a true visual spectacle. Far more than a simple vase, this piece possesses a remarkable sculptural presence. Val Saint-Lambert: a historic manufacture Founded in 1826, the Val Saint-Lambert crystal works holds a major place in Belgian glass heritage and in the history of European decorative arts. Renowned for the excellence of its craftsmanship, the richness of its colorations, and its sculptural creations, the factory developed in the 20th century numerous decorative lines blending glassmaking tradition with modernity. The model “Torsade,” documented in the 1950s, fits into this aesthetic pursuit that favors movement, light, and organic forms. A large format that is particularly decorative With a height of 28 cm, an opening of 22 cm, and a weight of 5.7 kg, this specimen has an imposing presence. Its large format is an undeniable aesthetic asset, especially when compared with smaller pieces. It will naturally find its place on a console, sideboard, end table, or in a display cabinet. Its deep color also harmonizes with both contemporary interiors and classic décors, Art Deco or Mid-Century Modern. When shown alone, it fully reveals the richness of its design and the beauty of its material. Condition Good overall presentation, with a bright color and well-preserved twisted decoration. For transparency, the following particulars are noted: * Under the base: presence of scratches, scuffs, and rubbing marks from use and handling over time. These marks are located under the vase and not visible in normal presentation. * Marking: presence of old marks under the bottom, some seemingly engraved into the surface. A possible signature cannot be confirmed with certainty, and the vase is therefore presented without authenticated signature. * Upper edge: very slight material loss, discreet, observable on close, careful inspection (see photo). These nuances are visible in the detailed photographs and are included in this description. Despite these signs of use, the vase retains a very attractive decorative presence.
