Val Saint Lambert – Luxval Art Deco Smoked Demi-Crystal Cheese Dome / Butter Dish No reserve price An exceptionally elegant and rare Art Deco cheese dome or covered butter dish by Val Saint Lambert, produced in Belgium as part of the celebrated Luxval collection. The model is documented in the original Val Saint Lambert Luxval catalogue, where both the domed cover and its matching scalloped underplate are illustrated. Dating from the Art Deco period, the piece displays the characteristic geometric modelling of the Luxval series: strongly faceted sides, a gently sweeping domed top and a distinctive pointed finial, combined with the softly undulating profile of the matching plate. Made from smoked demi-crystal, the glass has an unusually deep olive-grey tone which, depending on the lighting, appears almost black. This particularly dark smoked colour is among the more unusual and highly sought-after shades found in Luxval production, giving the piece a remarkably sophisticated and almost architectural appearance. Both elements — the dome and the underplate — bear the Val Saint Lambert signature, further confirming their origin and that they belong together as an original set. Originally designed as a functional table piece, it could have been used as a butter dish or small cheese dome. Today it works equally well as an elegant serving piece or as a highly decorative collector’s object representing Belgian Art Deco and one of Val Saint Lambert’s most iconic twentieth-century ranges. The set is preserved in exceptionally good condition, with no chips, cracks or noticeable scratches. Considering that the piece is approaching a century old, its remarkable state of preservation suggests that it was probably never, or only very rarely, used. A particularly attractive and uncommon example of Luxval demi-crystal, combining authentic Art Deco design, an exceptionally desirable smoked colour and outstanding condition. Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks. The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp. The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics. Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation. Some bubbles are normal in items made of pressed glass. Will be well packaged, protected and insured
