Offered at auction is a beautiful, original and not easily found Bronze Star Medal in its box, as it was awarded during World War II. A gorgeous, 100% original decoration, in good condition considering its age. Complete with box, medal, ribbon bar & lapel pin. "The Bronze Star Medal is an American military decoration awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for acts of heroism, meritorious service, or meritorious achievement in a combat zone." Colonel Russell P. “Red” Reeder came up with the idea for the Bronze Star Medal in 1943. He believed morale would improve if company or battery commanders could award a medal to deserv­ing servicemen under their command. Reeder felt that another medal was needed as a ground counterpart to the Air Medal, and proposed naming the new decoration the “Ground Medal.” The idea ultimately found its way through the military bureaucracy and gained increasing support. General George C. Marshall wrote in a memorandum to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, dated February 3, 1944: "The fact that ground troops, and especially the infantry, live under exceptionally strenuous conditions and are the ones who must approach the enemy in direct personal combat, makes the maintenance of their morale of great importance. The award of the Air Medal has had a negative effect on ground troops, particularly the infantrymen, who are currently suffering the heaviest losses in the Army, both from the air and on the ground, and who endure the greatest hardships."
