Unique US WWII group – Sgt. Joseph L. Savick – 11th Armored Division – Bronze Star & Purple Heart V-Mails, Letters, Patches, etc… A particularly extensive and personal WWII group originating from Sergeant Joseph L. Savick (ASN 42001636), who served during World War II with Company C, 21st Armored Infantry Battalion, 11th Armored Division, better known as the Thunderbolt Division, part of General Patton's Third Army. Savick took part in the heavy fighting during the Ardennes Offensive and the subsequent advance through Luxembourg and Germany. In his original letters he describes the harsh winter conditions, life at the front, confrontations with German soldiers and the devastation he encountered along the way. On March 6, 1945 Savick was wounded in combat in Germany in his left knee. He was evacuated to a military hospital in England, where he had to recover for a long time from his injuries. A recovered American newspaper article confirms that Savick received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service in combat against the enemy. In addition, a French decoration is mentioned. His award of the Purple Heart is also confirmed in the original family correspondence. The lot comprises a sizeable collection of original V-Mail letters, personal correspondence, envelopes, military documents, insignia, his Purple Heart & Bronze Star and other historical items that together give an exceptionally personal view of his war experiences. What makes this group special is the extensive correspondence between Savick, his parents and acquaintances. This allows his military history to be traced from the front line to his injury, hospitalization and recovery.
