Unusual Jabot Brooch Made of Gold, Coral, Lapis Lazuli & Diamonds, c. 1980

Like a small sprig of flowers preserved for eternity, this extraordinary jabot brooch from the 1980s unfolds. In this type of jewelry, the long pin and its exquisitely crafted clasp remain visible and form part of the piece of jewellery’s visible design. The highlight of the design is a lush bouquet of cherry blossoms. It is carved from Pacific precious coral, whose delicately iridescent shades of rose lend each blossom its own vitality. The motif is reminiscent of the Japanese cherry blossom festival, Hanami. For centuries, people in Japan have gathered beneath the blossoming trees to celebrate the brief, overwhelming moment of their bloom.
