ANTIQUE & VINTAGE PURSES (11) 1900 - 1950's The collection consists of nine assorted miniature purses decorated with glass beads on fabric, metal chain mesh, brocade, leather and one with a silver mount. This latter purse is made of purple beads with a white flower design and has a (marked) silver mount. An unusual brocade purse has on both sides brocade panels and is mounted on an early bakelite frame. Also of brocade, a smaller purse has a white metal frame and is trimmed with leather. A metal chain-mesh purse has a decorative lacy edge. A number of beaded purses in various colours are included in silver, gold, pink, black and blue. Similar small purses were made at the end of the 19th century and early in the 20th century to contain a few small coins, often added to a chatelaine. The purses in this collection were also called "Church Purses" as they were traditionally used for a church visit containing a few coins for the collection plate. The smaller purses could also be used to hang on the belt of a large folk-costume doll, these would be approx. 5/6cm. high. The longest in this collection is 10cm. high and the smallest is 6cm.. A number of the vintage purses from around 1950 are made of coloured beads on fabric. The collection is in very good condition.
