Beautiful Gem (1795) Liberty and Security Penny Undated (1795) Washington Liberty and Security Penny. Musante GW-45, Baker-30, W-11050. Copper. ASYLUM Edge. MS-66 BN (NGC). A superlative example of this important early American type, alone atop the NGC Census and unsurpassed at PCGS or in our experience as well. Rich light brown surfaces glow with luster, gently faded down from mint color. Some traces of red persist, especially at the peripheries, but the whole look of this coin is one that was allowed to simply mellow from bright red to its fixed and beautiful brown shade. The strike is superb, with full detail on even the often-soft central reverse. The fields and devices are essentially immaculate, with only a little mark below the epaulet worth noting. This piece is choice to the point of being nearly flawless. The edge lettering is bold, applied after striking (as typical) and thus leaving some impact on the rims. This was chosen for inclusion in the Partrick Collection and the Winslet Collection for good reason: it's almost impossible to imagine a better one. This type, unlike so many of the Washington portrait pieces of this era, actually saw American pockets. Examples have been found, often very well worn, by metal detectorists in the United States. This adds an important layer of desirability that some related issues cannot claim. Provenance: From the Winslet Collection. Earlier ex Robert Vlack; Donald G. Partrick; Heritage's sale of the Donald G. Partrick Collection, March 2021, lot 15432. NGC Census: 1; 0 finer. PCGS# 767. NGC ID: CC42. Click here for certification details from NGC.
