Undated (1795) Washington Liberty and Security Penny. Musante GW-45

Outstanding Liberty and Security Penny Corded Rims and Fire Gilt Undated (1795) Washington Liberty and Security Penny. Musante GW-45, Baker-30D/E, W-11055. Fire-Gilt Copper. ASYLUM Edge, Corded Outer Rims. AU-55 (PCGS). Handsome surfaces retain considerable gilding, with deep brown copper revealed only on the higher points of the motifs. Some scattered marks as expected for the grade include a minor reverse scratch under the letters UR in SECURITY, but this is easily overlooked. Nicely struck, with very good details and eye appeal. The corded rim medals of this series are much rarer than their non-corded counterparts and they seem to often be higher grade survivors suggesting that they were probably produced with a different intent general circulation. These were probably presentation pieces, or similar, and cared for. The writer suspects that this treatment was intended to even out the rims on this issue, which are often wavy due to interference from the edge lettering application. Fire gilt specimens are also quite scarce, but in contrast, these tend to be worn more often than not, with most of their gilding lost. They are very rare with anything close to full gilding as seen here. In recent offerings we have noted "the number of corded rim specimens produced might be similar to the number struck with fire gilt surfaces," but in this medal these rare features are combined. It is the only such example we are aware of. It is thus a great rarity of the series, and could well be unique. It is an ideal candidate for a specialized and extensive collection of Washington medals. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 784. NGC ID: 2B7W.
