UMIAK MODEL Greenland 19th / 20th century Wood and skin H. 18 cm – W. 71 cm – D. 9.5 cm Provenance: - Former private collection from the Bordeaux region, France. An old inventory label, No. 961(?)7, is affixed to the center of the upper edge of the gunwale. Constructed of driftwood and covered with finely tanned sealskins sewn together with tendons, this umiak model faithfully reproduces the large transport vessel used by all Arctic peoples for long collective sea voyages. Known as umiak, umialak, umiaq, umiac, oomiac, oomiak, ongiuk, or anyak, this open, skin-covered boat was used by the peoples of the far north, from Siberia to Greenland. First appearing during the Thule culture period around 1000 CE, this vessel was traditionally used during the summer to transport people and goods to seasonal hunting grounds, as well as for whaling and walrus hunting. The boat’s framework, always made of driftwood, was a testament to great ingenuity. Without metal tools or fasteners, the Inuit designed a solid, flexible, and lightweight structure, characterized by remarkable woodworking and a design perfectly suited to its purpose. The covering, made of sealskins, required anywhere from seven to more than thirty skins, depending on the size of the boat and the species of seal used. Fragile, especially when wet, this covering had to be carefully maintained, and every day the umiak was pulled out of the water to prevent the moisture-soaked skins from deteriorating.
