TWINS SEVEN SEVEN (Nigerian, 1944 - 2011) 'THE GREAT FARMERS...

TWINS SEVEN SEVEN (Nigerian, 1944 - 2011) 'THE GREAT FARMERS' (1999) MIXED MEDIA ON CLOTH AFFIXED signed, titled and dated along bottom edge glazed and framed 66 x 40 cm Born Omoba Taiwo Olaniyi Oyewale-Toyeje Oyelale Osuntoki in Ogidi, Kogi State, Nigeria, he adopted the name "Twins Seven-Seven" as the sole surviving child out of seven sets of twins born to his mother. Prince Twins Seven-Seven (born Omoba Taiwo Olaniyi Oyewale-Toyeje Oyelale Osuntoki) was introduced to visual art through German scholar Ulli Beier and artist Georgina Beier at the 1964 Oshogbo workshops. Raised in a deeply traditional Yoruba environment, he initially pursued performance as an itinerant dancer, musician, and actor before joining Duro Ladipo's theater troupe in Oshogbo during the early 1960s. In 1964, he attended the famous experimental workshops run by Ulli Beier and Georgina Beier. He pioneered a technique combining relief wood carving, pen-and-ink drawings, and mixed media on board. His dense, labyrinthine compositions often feature stylized deities, spirits, animals, and human figures. Beier was a core champion of his career, bridging his entry into European academic circles. His work was showcased across Germany in landmark surveys of contemporary African art, including major group and solo shows in Bayreuth, Munich, and Berlin. UNESCO Recognition: Named UNESCO Artist for Peace in 2005 for his work promoting Yoruba culture globally. Parallel to his art, he remained a prominent cultural ambassador and community leader in Nigeria, serving as a traditional chief and remaining active in civic life and music. In 2005, he was officially designated a UNESCO Artist for Peace in recognition of his lifetime contribution to promoting African culture and international dialogue.
