Trophime Bigot (1579-1650), Circle of - Adorazione dei Pastori - XL Format

This is a painting attributed to an exponent of the circle of Trophime Bigot (1579-1650), also known by the name of the “Master of the Candlelight.” Bigot was a French artist who studied under a Flemish master known as Louis Finsonius (1580-1617), one of the early Flemish exponents of Caravaggism. The corpus of his works consists mostly of sacred subjects, all sharing the same characteristic: light coming from a candle, and thus from an artificial light source that is often visible and sometimes not present in the depiction. Even the painting in question, an oil on canvase lined with a frame measuring 174 cm x 125 cm without the frame and 195 cm x 141 cm with the 17th-century contemporary frame, is characterized by the same artificial light source that emits a very faint glow. Everything is enveloped by a light that casts dark shadows and renders the material yellowish and reddish. This way of representing is quite rare in paintings of this period and in general. The attitudes of the characters are also very similar to the theatrical poses of the figures in Bigot’s works. One can see, for example, the “Man Screaming,” a famous work by Bigot, in a pose almost identical to that of the shepherd on the left of our painting’s composition. Bigot also produced various Adorations of the Shepherds, one of which is in a church in Provence (Saint-Georges à Mornas), for which it is very difficult to obtain photographic images. A black-and-white photo of a detail of this painting is attached at the end of the description, where one can notice a shepherd astonished in a pose almost identical to the shepherd on the left of the painting for sale. We know that this author tended to have two styles. In the first, he painted figures from life upward, while in the second he depicted them in full length. Works done in the first style were destined for the Italian market, while those depicted in the second manner were destined for the French and Flemish markets. This is undoubtedly a work with a strong Caravaggesque influence. It should be remembered that Bigot left many other works in Provence and that the corpus of his œuvre has not yet been completely reconstructed due to the French Revolution. Even if this may not be a work by Bigot, it could still be the work of a closely related master who also worked in Rome. In any case, it is also a large-scale work, with excellent painting technique. It is a wonderful piece. The paintings by the French master discussed here are preserved in the Galleria Corsini in Rome, in the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj in Rome, and in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. A certificate of authenticity issued by individuals with degrees in Art History is provided. The shipment will be carried out professionally with a wooden crate and via the Mail Boxes Etc service. For shipments outside the European Union, there are some bureaucratic formalities to be completed, and therefore there is an expected wait of about 15-20 days.
