TREASURES OF THE CELTIC PRINCES - Lot 247

TREASURES OF THE CELTIC PRINCES Paris: Éditions de la Réunion des musées nationaux, 1987. A substantial square in-4° volume, paperback with a color-illustrated cover. Exhibition at the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, October 20, 1987 – February 15, 1988. Extensive black-and-white and color illustrations, maps, plans, archaeological surveys, and catalog entries. ISBN 2-7118-2148-X. A major catalog of the exhibition “Treasures of the Celtic Princes,” an event dedicated to the great archaeological discoveries of Celtic Europe and, in particular, to the rich aristocratic burials of the Hallstatt and early La Tène periods. The volume brings together scholarly studies and a detailed catalog of objects from major European sites. In particular, it presents the burial complexes at Vix, Hochdorf, Apremont, Hallstatt, Klein Aspergle, and Gurgy, with extensive archaeological documentation: plans of the tombs and burial mounds, reconstructions, grave goods, weapons, jewelry, metal tableware, chariots, and prestige objects. The cover features a remarkable anthropomorphic bronze figurine, emblematic of ancient Celtic art. The photographs notably feature Alain Duval’s study of the burial complexes at Gurgy (Yonne), as well as documentation of the princely burial mound at Hochdorf, one of the most famous Celtic burial complexes in Europe. Condition A good copy. The interior is fresh and clean. The cover is well-preserved, though there are fairly visible scratches and scuffs on the back cover, a few superficial marks on the front cover, and slight wear on the corners and edges. The binding is sturdy.
